The National Programme for Health Care for the Elderly (NPHCE) is a modest attempt by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare to address the issue of health care problems of elderly by way of introducing a comprehensive health care set up completely dedicated and tuned to the needs of the elderly. As the elderly population is bound to increase in future, there is definite need to emphasize the fact that diseases and disability are not part of old age and help must be sought to address the health problems. The concept of active and healthy ageing needs to be promoted not only among the elderly but the younger age groups as well, which includes promotional, preventive and rehabilitative aspects of health.
The basic aim of the NPHCE is to provide separate and specialized comprehensive health care to senior citizens at various levels of the health care delivery system through 24 States/UTs through 104 identified District Hospital, 930 Community Health Center and including 4439 Primary Health Centers and 28767 Sub Centers.
Now, the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare intend to introduce a new scheme for health care for elderly at the tertiary level by establishing National Centres of Ageing and additional Regional Geriatric Centres. The focus of the strategies shall be for population above 75 years.
In this regard, citizens of India are requested to offer suitable title for the programme.
The best three selected titles shall be suitably recognized by providing certain incentives in the form of appreciation certificate of cash.
